Downtowns Turn to Security Cameras as Low-Cost Crime Deterrent

Wireless security cameras are being used in downtown\'s that can\'t afford a round-the-clock police presence.

(Boonton, NJ, April 4, 2011) — Security cameras installed in parking garages have contributed to the perception of safer space, to lower crime rates and higher conviction rates. Now downtowns are considering wireless camera systems that will allow police departments to have eyes on city centers when officers must patrol elsewhere.

The lead article in the April issue of Downtown Idea Exchange newsletter looks at how three downtowns are using security cameras.

In one example, downtown Ottumwa, IA, was experiencing "a considerable amount of crime," according to police chief Jim Clark. But as a department of 40 officers, Clark could not permanently put an officer on foot downtown.

Instead, the City considered security cameras and sought input from community leaders and business owners. "Some people in the community are concerned that this is the government intruding on their privacy," says Clark. "However, most, if not all, of the downtown business owners are happy because we are providing a safe place for them and their customers."

Details on how Ottumwa financed and implemented its security camera program along with details from Austin, TX, and Miami Beach, FL, are in the April issue of Downtown Idea Exchange newsletter.
