How to Manage Bad News in Your Downtown

(Boonton, NJ, March 2, 2009) — A spike in store robberies and property vandalism suddenly hits the downtown area. Sidewalk sweeping will be reduced from six days per week to just one day. The title sponsor pulled out of the Christmas parade.

When situations like these arise, it calls for prompt and appropriate action from the downtown organization to calm fears and build confidence.

The key to successfully managing the situation hinges on communicating four things, says communications consultant Lindsay Strand, in the March 1 issue of Downtown Promotion Reporter:

  • Downtown is on top of the problem.
  • Downtown knows what's going on.
  • Downtown has a plan in place to address it.
  • Downtown is being proactive.
