Collaboration Reduces Competition and Offers Cost Savings for Downtown Organizations

Downtown development groups, chambers of commerce, convention and visitors bureaus, and other local organizations are all seeking ways to pool resources and avoid duplication of effort. The end result: cost savings and fewer demands on a donor and volunteer base, which may be stretched to the limit.

(Boonton, NJ, February 1, 2011) — Tighter budgets have encouraged organizations across the nation to explore ways to pool resources, avoid duplication of effort and unite for a stronger marketing presence. There are often several organizations within a city, county or region with similar economic development missions. In tight economic times, it may make sense to work together to better meet mutual goals.

In Defiance, OH, potential partners convened for the first time in December 2010 to explore options. Agenda topics included budgets, tax status, public relations, clear missions, fundraising and memberships.

One of the first outcomes of this meeting is the co-location of the Defiance Development & Visitors Bureau with the Chamber of Commerce. Each organization will continue to do what it does best and retain its identity. The things they can share, like volunteer pools, staffing during peak times, and expenses, should show immediate impact.
