Vacant Storefronts Provide Opportunities to Draw People Downtown

From New Haven, CT, to Seattle, WA, creative partnerships are bringing artwork to vacant storefronts, drawing visitors into the downtown area, and filling vacant spaces with long-term tenants.

(Boonton, NJ, January 18, 2011) — Downtowns across the nation are transforming vacant storefronts into opportunities for artists and fledgling entrepreneurs with creative ideas. Thanks to partnerships between downtown organizations, property owners and the artistic community, seemingly abandoned blocks of city centers are coming back to life as colorful, interesting gathering places. There are as many ways to partner, fund and fill storefronts, as there are communities with vacant downtown buildings.

New Haven, CT; Missoula, MT; and Seattle, WA have taken different approaches with each filling vacant storefronts with vibrant art and exhibits and renting many of those spaces to long-term tenants.

Full details on these programs appear in the January issue of Downtown Promotion Reporter.
