Converting public space into an ice rink provides variety and wonderful programming opportunities downtown during winter months when city centers are traditionally not as active.
(Boonton, NJ, January 17, 2012) — Converting public space into an ice rink provides variety and wonderful programming opportunities during the winter months when city centers are traditionally not as active. One interesting example is downtown Newport, RI, which boasts a portable skating rink. As Rich Travis, senior events manager for the rink says, "Where people are sitting to see concerts during the summer, they are skating during the winter."
The rink is supported by a naming sponsor, individual event sponsors and admission fees. But best of all says Travis is that the rink is well loved by skaters, the city and downtown businesses. "We no longer have a dead season here," he adds.
Details on downtown rinks in Newport, RI, San Jose, CA, and others appears in the January issue of Downtown Promotion Reporter.
